Start by measuring your ceiling height and the available floor space. Remember to leave room for your tree stand and tree topper. Slim Christmas trees can work well in smaller rooms, while fuller trees suit spaces with more floor area.

A 7 to 7.5-foot Christmas tree is a popular choice for many rooms with an 8-foot ceiling, but always measure your space first and allow enough clearance for the stand and tree topper.

Pre-lit Christmas trees can make setup quicker because the lights are already positioned on the tree. Unlit artificial trees offer more freedom to choose your own light colors, styles and placement each Christmas.

Look at the tree’s branch construction, needle material, fullness and overall shape. PE molded branch tips generally provide a more natural appearance, while many artificial trees combine PE and PVC branches to balance realism and fullness.

The ideal number depends on your tree’s height, width and how bright you want the finished display to look. A fuller or more heavily lit Christmas tree will generally require more lights than a slim tree or a subtle lighting design.

Start with a Christmas tree and build around it with ornaments, lights, a tree topper and a tree skirt. Wreaths, garlands, stockings, tabletop decorations and outdoor Christmas décor can then help carry the festive theme throughout your home.

Remove decorations and lights that aren’t permanently attached, carefully collapse or fold the branches according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and use a suitable tree storage bag or container. Keep the tree in a clean, dry storage area.
